The "Guernica" of Picasso to Gernika

On 1936, during the spanish civil war, the provinces controlled by basque nationalists, communists and anarchists faced against spanish fascist army.

One of the brutalities committed by fascists was the bombing of Gernika (Bizkaia south basque country). Gernika is an important symbol of basque culture and nationalism.

With the collaboration of Nazi aviation, fascist army bombed civilians. Hundreds of basques were killed during the bombing. Spanish dictatorship accused the provisional basque government of the bombing (totally false). The german government apologized on 1997, the spanish government have not apologized. The symbol that represents the suffering of that bombing was the "Guernica" (a painting of Picasso).

The town hall of Gernika want to collect signatures to move the painting to Gernika. According to them, "Picasso painted it to remember a bombing should not happen ever. That's why, basque people think that the painting should be returned to the basque country". The painting is now in Madrid.
