Korrika!

One of the most importants events of Basque culture starts today: "Korrika" (Running). Korrika is a biannual 10 day-long race in support of AEK and basque language (euskara). AEK is an organization that teaches cheaply basque language or helps people (to adults) recovering it or improving their level. More than 2.000 km across the Basque Country to be done with no-stop running. Tens of thousands participate in the "Korrika". People or organizations "buy" kilometres and with that money AEK can continue teaching basque.

Groups of friends, little companies, trade unions, political parties, associations etc. buy a KM and they pass the baton to the next KM. In the baton there is a message that is read in the final of Korrika. The first korrika was on 1980, and each edition there is a different topic. The slogan of this year is "Eman euskara elkarri-Give Euskara each other". On some places, authorities (specially in Nafarroa) puts obstacles and there are problems with police or "guardia civil" (spanish military police). According to them, "Korrika" is used by basque pro-independence movement to show their claims.

The Korrika of this year has started in Andoain (Gipuzkoa south basque country) and will end in Baiona (Lapurdi north basque country).
