High-speed rail in basque country |
According to berria, today has started the trial against Manex Castro and Iraitz Santa Cruz. They are accused of killing Ignacio Uria on 2008. Ignacio Uria was a businessman implicated in the construction of High-speed rail in south basque country. The High-Speed rail is a controversial project rejected by different ecologist organizations and basque national liberation movement. Although there are important cuts in social services, healthcare, education system etc. The construction of High-Speed rail have continued supported by spanish unionism (UPN-PP-PSOE) and basque right (PNV/EAJ). In the past, High Speed rail was targeted by ETA with bombs and sabotages. On 2008, some militants of ETA killed Ignacio Uria (an important businessman) who was linked with a company that was building the rail.
Spanish authorities have asked 59 years of imprisonment to Manex Castro (accused of killing Uria and of being member of "a terrorist group) and 10 years to Iraitz Santa Cruz (accused of helping ETA). Spanish authorities have also asked them to pay the damages: 160.000 euros for the widow and 240.000 for the sons and daughthers.
